How To Pick Between Different Types Of Window Treatments

Window shades, shutters, and blinds–oh my! The range of window treatments for sale may seem overwhelming when picking one for your Boston home. Understanding the pros and cons of each one will help you decide the best treatment for your interior and lifestyle. Keep reading to explore the different types of window treatments and how they might benefit your family.

The Pros And Cons Of Interior Shutters

Commonly called “plantation shutters,” interior shutters are constructed of sturdy materials. They include pivoting panels enclosed in a frame affixed to your window. Each panel has a row of rotating louvers. You can turn the louvers and close and open the panels to your preferred setting.

The Pros

Due to their robust construction, plantation shutters are generally able to supply all you want from a window treatment:

  • An elegant design feature for windows
  • Neutral colors to coordinate with your decor
  • Absolute privacy
  • Outstanding governance over outside light
  • Simple operation
  • Incredible durability and unparalleled longevity from Polywood® shutters
  • Ideal fit for any window shape or size
  • Better energy efficiency than other window treatments
  • Greater home resale value
  • Child- and pet-safe
  • Multiple customizations to personalize how your shutters work

The Cons

Plantation shutters aren’t right for everyone. If you want a softer material on your windows or wish to introduce a pop of color, you’ll need to consider some different types of window treatments in Boston.

The Pros And Cons Of Window Shades

Window shades come in numerous styles, but they usually all utilize a length of fabric hung above the window. Hold the shade’s base and move it up or down to reveal or cover your window. You may also choose motorized shades. You adjust these with a remote control, wall button, or even a vocal command or smartphone app if you choose smart shades. You can also program smart shades to cover or uncover your window according to a schedule. Motorized shades add remarkable convenience.

The Pros

Window shades and motorized shades can do a terrific job of blocking light and the visibility into your home. Their primary advantage is the numerous styles they come in. Pick from your preference of:

  • Colors
  • Motifs
  • Materials
  • Opacities

The various window shades have their own advantages too. Roller shades have a minimalist appearance. Cellular shades add efficiency. Motorized shades of all styles give you more convenient management over sunlight and home comfort for windows of various sizes.

The Cons

Window shades can’t provide the resiliency of rigid window treatments and are typically difficult to clean. Their fabric panels will eventually fade from exterior light or could become soiled, rip, or grow mold.

Window shades also offer less flexibility in balancing privacy and daylight than plantation shutters. They may leave openings at the edges or enable shadows to show through if your lights are on during the night.

The Pros And Cons Of Window Blinds

Window blinds have a row of long slats made from a rigid material that you lower over your windows to shield them. You may also rotate the slats open or closed for additional governance over daylight.

The Pros

Blinds are made to obstruct daylight and views into your Boston home, but their construction and quality decide how well they do this. While some blinds are known as insubstantial, premium wood and faux-wood blinds give you more durability and other benefits like:

  • Effortless performance
  • Longevity
  • Visual appeal

The Cons

Even the most well-built blinds have a few disadvantages. They can let light in around their edges or shift in a breeze, exposing your home’s interior to outside viewers. They offer little insulation and, by nature, won’t hold up as well as more durable shutters. They can also be challenging to clean.

The Pros And Cons Of Drapes

Drapes are made of long, flowing fabric utilized to conceal windows. Their material is generally more substantial than curtains and reinforced for improved insulation and light-blocking capabilities. Drapes might come in a pair of panels that you draw back from the center or one sizeable panel that you pull across your window from the sides. They can hang from and move along a curtain rod or a track.

The Pros

Thick drapes excel at blocking daylight and drafts when closed. They are available in various different textures, patterns, and colors to coordinate with your decor. They give windows a classy, traditional appearance many people like.

The Cons

Drapes can present a stiff, formal appearance that doesn’t suit every home. They can appear luxurious on tall windows but can be difficult to move unless you get motorized ones. Drapes also don’t have many options for governing sunlight and privacy–they’re either open or shut.

We come out to your home to measure the windows you want to add shutters to and bring samples of all of our shutter products and their available options. The complete plantation shutter process, from your starting consultation to installing the shutters, will take approximately four to six weeks. The reason it takes this long is because our goal is to build shutters that are completely customized to your windows. Doing that requires us to take precise measurements, use advanced software to design your shutters, assemble your brand-new shutters by hand, and get them to your home for installation. Shutters made from real wood typically take longer because of the added steps of staining and finishing the wood.

It will take some time, but it’s a wait that’s well worth it.

Far and away our most popular shutter offerings are our classic white Polywood® faux wood plantation shutters, and Ovation® wood shutters.

More specifically, the most popular shutter configuration we sell is a 3.5” louver, non-textured finish, with a Z-frame. If those words don’t mean anything to you, that’s ok. We’ll be happy to demonstrate what all those things mean in person. Schedule your free home consultation and we’ll help you figure out what would work best on your windows.
